Free Themes does not gives advanced options as the Premium themes have.That”s why Premium Themes are most used.

Well it’s a question which can not be answered by anyone. I think that premium theme is not so necessary. All it needs how much you know about coding. I you are good in coding you can design your theme from scratch and give the look according your taste.
and talking about thesis, it always a good one and i have installed it on one of my blog.
