What is The Best Platform For Blogging? WordPress Vs Blogspot

by Rajesh Kanuri on January 4, 2010

Blogging is the most powerful media to express your views with the world and according to the recent survey’s there were about 900,000 new blogs coming into existence. One has to be more cautious when they start blogging and I sincerely suggest for the newbies to study about the basics of the blogging. I like the saying by my fellow blogger Harsh Agarwal “If Content is the King, SEO is the Queen”, Yeah I totally agree with him in this context. After Content, SEO is the most important thing one has to concentrate. Good Content makes your website unique but SEO is the thing which helps you in driving traffic. So which is the best platform between Blogger vs WordPress.

wordpress vs blogspot What is The Best Platform For Blogging? Wordpress Vs Blogspot

What is the Best Platform to start with?

Blogger: Blogger (Blogspot) is the group company of Google which gives you free blog with subdomain (yourname.blogspot.com). It has lot of options, simple and the blogger dashboard is very easy and user friendly to start with and there is huge community support for the bloggers. Thousands of free themes were available which suits your needs to start with. Blogger is based on HTML and it will be much easier if u speak HTML. As per my observation the blogger based blogs will be indexed frequently by the Google Bots. So need not worry more about the SEO for your blog but you have to be wise while using the keywords, As keywords were the only SEO game we can play with blogger blogs. You can monetize your blogger blog to earn some income while blogging. In blogger we can add our own domain for your existing blog for free of cost.

Check out the latest discount coupons to register domain name.

WordPress.com: WordPress.com is an Automattic Company which owns the most popular open source blogging software WordPress. It provides you free blog with subdomain (yourname.wordpress.com). The dashboard and usability of the wordpress.com blogs were good and it has limited scope of customization when compared to the blogger blogs. You have pay additional amount if you choose to have any additional options, This puts it back in the rat race with blogger. In addition to this you cannot choose additional free themes and we cannot monetize with wordpress.com blogs.

WordPress.org (Self Hosted): This is the best blogging available and every will suggest this to start a blog. To start a blog using wordpress blogging software you need have a domain name which usually costs less than 10$, hosting space which costs you about 5-7$ dollars per month (HostMonster is the best Web host and recommend by TechCats). This is the only constraint and money matters if you want to start a self-hosted wordpress blog. It has wide range of options available in the dashboard. The functionality of the wordpress blog can be enhanced by installing plugins, Themes (There are thousands of themes available for free). By default this blog is Search Engine Optimised and one has to worry in making them much more enhanced.

For the professionals and for those who were serious about blogging will (have to) start with self-hosted wordpress blog.

Although every platform has its own uniqueness, most of the bloggers around the world will suggest self-hosted wordpress blog. Even I am the one who suggest the self-hosted wordpress blog but I will suggest that for only for those who were really serious about blogging. In my opinion blogger with own domain is the best option for personal blogs.

And finally the self-hosted wordpress blog is the ultimate winner in Blogger Vs WordPress.

I totally agree! If you are serious about blogging (and want to come across as serious), you need to be on wordpress.

If you are just blogging for fun, then it doesn’t really matter.

I think more and more pro bloggers are using Type Pad/Movable Type and Square Space nowadays. But, WordPress definitely widely used.

Well, wordpress is great until yesterday, but the recent PR update proved that blogspot blogs has got some worth too. Most of my friends who use blogspot blogs were incremented from PR0 OR 1 to PR3 and PR4. So blogspot, is not the least.

Blogger/blogspot and wordpress.com are great tools to start blogging.

I agree, however, if a blogger wants to be taken seriously, then wordpress.org (self-hosted) is the only way to go. The small investment of under $100/yr is well worth it.

I would suggest everyone to use wordpress as i am a fan of wordpress and its very easy to customize and upgrade. WordPress themes are widely available for free as well premium. :D

I dont say that Blogger is not good but the thing is that Many Advertising company’s wont consider Blog which is hosted with Blogger. They always prefers the Blog which is self hosted and with proper domain not sub domain. One of my friend’s blog is PR7 but still he can advertise only Adsense as many times his blog got rejected form Advertising agencies. :)

This is just my point of views and Experiences, other may have different different opinion and experiences.

Thanks to Rajesh Kanuri for a great post.

Blogger hasits own limitations as it is a free service by Google, and moreover WordPress is proved to be the best blogging platform as morethan 200 million blogs were using that today..

Reply

Aditya Kane January 5, 2010 at 3:09 am

I agree that WordPress is the most diverse blogging platform with a lot of options and plugins to do all kinds of things. This is mainly because WOrdpress is a net publishing tool and not limited to blogs. Over 200 million websites use WordPress and many are not even remotely resembling blogs.
But the key question here is WHat is a blog? What is a successful blog? A blog that makes money ? What if the blogger is not looking to make money, or concerned about PR. What if the blogger only want to share things with a committed audience of 100 -200 friends. If thats what the blogs sets out to do and achieves it we cant call it a unsuccessful blog.
In this regards considering the money angle Blogger seems the best platform. I agree Wp is miles ahead for versatality but best bl0gger platform should also take into the account the millions who write a blog not for money or fame but just because they want to.

Blog is not only for earning money but letting world know someones hidden talent or anything. Some people writes about their daily life because they love to write but not to earn money. I have many Blogger friends and 75% just do blogging because they like blogging. We can do any type of blogging. Earning money only is not considered as blogging. as you are asking What is Blogging? if you don’t know then you can go thorough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog . Any platform can be used for blogging either WordPress or Blogspot and both are meant for Blogging only the thing with WordPress is that we can use it more the Blogging.

What a rocking topic….I myself migrated from blogger to WP due to several reasons. Both has its own advantages and disadvantages…Free WP don’t allow to place ads and change the template look but its code is W3C validated whereas the internal coding structure of Blogger is a mess.

Thanks

Blogger I think rules because it’s backend control panel is superbly easy to use for any non-IT professional. You can easily get Google Ads and also get alot of useful and exciting widgets to increase traffic and make your blog look good. You can also get Chitika Ads even if your blog is unranked in Google. Blogger also provides alot of other useful options for it’s user this is why it is being used more than WordPress.

Certainly WordPress is the best blogging platform, because it is very easy to use and has a lot of features. A lot of plugins and themes are available for WordPress. Well Blogspot is also quite good but features are quite limited. But you may be surprised to know that Most of the top blogs use Movable Type (another Blogging Platform) instead of WordPress. For example, Obama’s blog. Well I read it somewhere.
