How To Get More Comments On Your Blog

by Rajesh Kanuri on December 9, 2009

Increase commentsI always mention that commenting is the most important task for a blogger, and the bloggers duty should never end up after posting he should spend at least 1-2 hours a day in social media and commenting on other blogs which not only helps you in driving the traffic but also helps you to maintain good relationship’s with the fellow bloggers. Recently I have shared my little success of blogging like how commenting helped me in gaining traffic and 1000 comments landmark about my blog. After my earlier posts most of my readers asked me how I manage to get 1000 comments in 2 months of blogging and here my personal observations and the ways I follow to make my blog popular in masses.

Question the Reader

question mark How To Get More Comments On Your BlogGreat articles with unique content is always king but posting an article won’t help you in getting comments it is recommended to ask a question to the readers and encourage them to share your about your article, This may rise an interest in your readers and makes them either comment or give you some share love. I am sure that you will notice questions like “share your opinion”, “what do feel about this?” at the end of my posts. The important one to note here is that you appeal should encourage the readers to comment remember that you should never plead for comments or share the article it makes the reader to create a negative opinion on your blog.

Be active at Shout Box

Always be prompt and quick to answer your reader queries. Be polite to the commentator’s and thank them if they encourage or leave an appreciation in their comments. Never give false statements like you know everything and don’t claim yourself as a geek. Recently we have announced blogging services and many readers raised me question about the types of services we offer, I answered them promptly and also said that we look into some particular issues and assured them that I will come up with a solution. Remember that no one is perfect. :)

Run Contests

Run contests which are as simple as possible even a “Top Commentator” contest will make the readers (at least bloggers) to leave more comments on you blog. Always be first to Give away freebies like New Orkut design invitations or Google Wave Invitations which will help others and also make them happy.

Comment Box

Avoid captcha at comment box; keep that as simple as possible. As many readers(Even I am one among them) hate captcha  and may also avoid such blogs as they will be time consuming. In case if you need to use captcha use simple mathematical calculations or simple text (even though I do not prefer to use captcha). Instead use spam filter plugins like Aksimet.

Be a Responsible Commentator

Don’t be harsh while commentating on other blogs. Try to convey your opinion and object the idea if you really don’t like it. Never end up posting “Nice Post” or “Thanks”. Be brief and try to be informative in your comments. According to a survey which I read at a blog (sorry I forgot the name of the blog) informative comments will make the reader anxious about your blog and helps you in gaining a traffic lead to your blog.

What do say about this post? Did u feel that I missed something which is more important? Let us know about your opinions. Yours is always better than mine. :)

all are perfect points. commenting encourage both the bloggers. Be a responsible commentator is a very valid point.. Just writing good post or nice article will be effective. We should mention some more additional points.. we can also send thanksgiving mail to each commentator when they comment for the first time in our blog. this will be more encouraging.. what do you say about it?

I like the last point…. because when they comment they try to fill the comment box with some rubbish… some say only thanks, and some only puts the link to their blog thinking that they can steal away some of the visitors from that blog… but i can remeber reading this at problogger : “leaving helpful and insightful comments on forums or other blogs can be great at driving traffic if your comment is genuine, relevant and sensitive to the discussion.”

Even I was thinking about this from 2-3 days and I am happy that someone joins me.
Thanks for this wonderful article.
And one more thing is you should try to make one or two controversial posts because controversies always work to get lots of comments…

We trialled a few different captchas but they were just a barrier for our readers. Our comments have grown since we removed the last captcha (simple maths) that we had in place. Our spam has also grown but Akismet does a good job of catching that for us.

Nice post.

At times I get frustrated and leave very harsh comments.
But when i check again (i use subscribe to follow comments)
I see that the author has published my comment instead of disapproving it.
Which shows how much he has respected my comment no matter what i have mentioned.

Then again i leave a comment appologizing.
It’s not that he hasn’t provided enough info, but due to my frustration of long search, i fail to read the article properly.

You have managed to make some good points and bring up yet another topic for discussion Raj – in essence , it all boils down to Connecting w/ one another ; it is ‘Action & Reaction ‘ . This is how everything works basically & what goes around comes around . Now as far as the captcha is concerned , I deplore it with every being of my fiber :D – I will admit that I will not comment on a blog using captcha – I feel that since my own blog doesnt have it ( in consideration of the user ) , why should some other blog have it ? ( silly yes ) however : if a user receives spam content or profane comments – they can always delete them ; its as simple as that [ or as you mentioned : Akismet. This doesnt have to be Quantum Physics , its just reaching out & voicing your opinion/feedback on a topic / discussion panel. Simple as that . Great post ( once again Raj :) ) .

You share some great tips. I am planning on running a contest by having people follow me on twitter, retweet, and subscribe to blog. The only thing is figuring out a easier way to keep in track of all this (retweets and who followed me). I was thinking of using hash tags (ex. #examplecontest) so it can be easily searched.

Any recommendation?
