Wordpress backup plugins and tools and tipsIf you are planning for the modification of your theme and if you are not sure about the result of your modification, It is always a good practice to backup the current theme especially when your theme is custom made or you have modified a theme which you have purchased or downloaded somewhere else.

Now the question is how to back up your current theme? You need to be an expertise to this you just have to follow the steps as mentioned below:

  1. Download and install an FTP program (e.g. FileZilla).
  2. Enter your hostname and login credentials of your hosting account.
  3. Browse to the root folder of your site and then wp-content → themes → Your current theme.Browse the themes under content in wordress installation
  4. Right click on your current theme folder and click on download and save it on your computer.downlaod your current wordpress theme
  5. Once that’s done. Now you can play with your current theme and incase If some things goes wrong you can always switch back to the old one by uploading to the same directory.

Alternative Method:

if you want to download the content of the theme and not the entire folder of the theme you can just login to your wordpress Admin panel and browse to your current theme editor and copy and paste the content of the theme into a notepad file which can be used while troubleshooting or switching back to your old theme

But it is always recommended to backup your entire theme to avoid unavoidable errors.

The post is good Rajesh but instead of downloading and installing FTP you can directly type http://ftp.yourwebsite eg(ftp.sandeshm.com) then it will ask for the user name and password. Once done you can directly copy and paste.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea how to backup a wp theme. I used to follow the 2nd step mentioned above. Now you have made it easy.

I used cuteFTP and find it bit complecated with filezilla.
I will give a try with filezilla as it is free. Once again thanks Rajesh Kanuri.

It’s always a good idea to have a copy of your theme on your laptop. But I would also like to have such an option online. If you come across such a site, please write a post on it

Prior to any modification, it’s important to make sure the theme is well preserved, just in case. FTP program is a great idea for theme backup. I use the similar service and satisfied with the reliability.
