When we talk about Search engine optimization of WordPress, it is already 80% SEO optimized but rest part should be taken care by plugins and other on page optimization. Here I’m sharing few useful plugins which will help you to optimize your blog for search engine :
Google XML sitemap
I’m not starting with All in one SEO or Platinum SEO plugin, because this is the plugin every wordpress user install from the first day. Though Google XML sitemap falls under the same category. This plugin helps you to create a sitemap of your blog and you can submit it to various search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask and many more. Putting your site map link in the bottom of your blog will also help search engine bots to crawl your site easily and effectively.
Broken Link checker :
Broken links are considered as dead end for search engine. For any blog having lots of broken link is always considered as bad SEO. Broken link checker plugin check your blog for all the broken links and report it on dashbaord. Few things which you considered while using this plugin, if you have a busy site and lots of posts, it may slow down your site at the time of checking for broken links. I will suggest use this plugin on day when you get less traffic, preferably on Weekends.
Nofollow for posts WordPress Plugin
Linking your post to bad neighborhood is considered as bad for SEO. Sometime search engine consider as link sell or link farm. In case if you have to mention any bad (warez, Po*n ) websites in your post. Use this post to make that link nofollow. This plugin will help you to quickly add nofollow attribute into your blog post.
SEO Friendly Image WordPress Plugin
Do you know you can use images to drive huge traffic into your blog. Like in a post we add meta description, meta title to make it search engine optimized. For Images we need to add Alt text. SEO friendly Image plugin will add Alt tag from the name of the image. Though make sure you should n’t use name like Image0007.jpeg and so on. Always keep the name of the image close to the post title, if you use wordpress dashbaord to upload your images, I will also suggest to add one line description this will help a lot to drive huge traffic to your blog from image search engine.
Note: I have not covered All in one SEO plugin because its one plugin which I believe should be a part of WordPress core.

Google XML Sitemap is really important, However I have a piece of advice for everyone, whenever you change the .htaccess file make sure your sitemap loads file. I made a small change in .htacess to allow access to Web Optimizer plugin, and that screwed my sitemap.xml file. Unfortunately I dint note it for more than 2 months, and it took more than a day to figure out that the problem was with .htaccess. Thanks for mentioning “Broken Link Checker” and “No Follow for Post” , they are new to me.
And Harsh, I have a doubt regarding SEO Friendly Images – “Will this plugin override the alt and description text that we usually give during the image upload” or they will be maintained. ?I have added the plugin a couple of weeks back but removed it thinking it will replace the text I gave with the default ones.
